The lead organisation can either be an established local or foreign company / organisation that will operate in the East African Community (EAC) – Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Only in exceptional cases will LIFT consider new businesses (start-ups), where there is strong evidence that the new company has credible and experienced investors and management team.
For commercial projects, the lead applicant must be a private for-profit organization.
The project must hold the potential to reduce transport and logistics costs.
Funding is for the project and not for the corporate entity.
For business-led projects, at least 50% of funds for the project must be provided by the applicant.
All applicants must demonstrate their capacity to implement their proposed project, and will need to demonstrate sound financial performance and clear corporate governance structures.
The project must demonstrate that the activities which will be funded by LIFT will be additional to the company’s existing activities and that the project would not go ahead without LIFT funding. LIFT will also consider projects that would have gone ahead at a reduced pace or scale in the absence of LIFT support.
